Soldiers and marines disabled in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will spend a week in Sacramento learning sports to help them cope with their disabilities and adapt to everyday life. For the sixth year, Disabled Sports USA Far West is bringing those modern-day American heroes to Sacramento to help them begin to continue to lead active, productive lives. The week will culminate in an inspirational dinner to honor the soldiers’ sacrifices for our nation. Participation in sports rehabilitation programs has long been recognized as being a powerful catalyst in the development of a positive self image and achieving attitude for people with disabilities. Our honored guests will gain specific skills that will increase their self-confidence and mobility.
The week starts with a Sports Rehabilitation Camp for 25 soldiers and marines disabled in Iraq and Afghanistan. They will receive specialized instruction in waterskiing, whitewater rafting, paddle sports, adapted cycling and sled hockey. This program is designed as part of their therapy and re-integration into the community.
