VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Fundraising and Special Events

Individual donors are critical to our success. Become a donor and help us acquire new donors via your networks. Contact Haakon Lang-Ree, Program Director at 530-581-4161 x201 or haakon@disabledsports.net

Special Events (Year Round) are a vital source of funding. Volunteers help secure silent auction prizes, solicit sponsors, act as “event staff,” and as committee heads, help decorate, hang banners, distribute flyers, prepare food, sell event and raffle tickets and help with event setup and breakdown. Contact Mary Roll, Events Coordinator at x205 or mary@disabledsports.net

Programs

Adaptive Snowsports Instructor (Winter)
Instructors provide specialized adaptive instruction for people with disabilities. They work on a personal level to help students successfully learn to ski or snowboard.  Candidates must be an intermediate skier or higher, must be comfortable working with people with disabilities, and must be physically fit and able to lift a student multiple times. Instructors must be committed to working outdoors in varying weather conditions in a mountain environment.  Instructors must be capable of travel to Alpine Meadows or Squaw when committed to do so.  Professional ski instruction experience is preferred but not required.  Disabled Sports provides training and support.  Instructors are asked to commit a minimum of 8 days or 16 half day lessons a season.  The snowsports season runs from early-December to May.  Contact Brian Sheckler at 530-581-4161 x204 or brian@disabledsports.net or Michael Hunter at 530-481-4161 x208 or michael@disabledsports.net

Water Ski Volunteer (Summer)
Our water ski program in the Sacramento Valley is held at private water ski lakes. You assist with equipment set-up and water starts. Your day lasts six to eight hours, and you will typically be in and out of the water all day. Water Ski Volunteers are required to attend training (mandatory for new volunteers, optional for returning), volunteer at least 3 days, be a strong swimmer, and be able to transfer a participant weighing at least 100 lbs. No prior water skiing experience is necessary. Begin by helping participants from dry dock and with more experience help students and staff in and on the water.
